There is only so long that you can resist when a cat chooses to adopt you.

Cats adopt their humans. In the cat community, this is not merely an idea- it is a statement of fact. You may think, when you walk into a shelter, that you have some choice in the matter, that you get to decide, but no, you don't. You may walk into a shelter wanting to adopt a kitten and adopt the oldest cat instead. You may never get to the shelter in the first place, because a cat will decide to adopt you when you're on a walk outside. You never know when or how it will happen, but once it does - once you are chosen, resistance is futile.

Countless times, we have seen people who "hate cats" get chosen by them and fall in love. They may resist for a while. They may try to hold onto this idea of cat hatred. But cats don't give their humans a choice in the matter. Cats adopt, and we adjust, and then, we realize just how lucky we are to have been chosen by them. Yes, it took a minute for the person who shared their story on r/notmycat to accept that their "notmycat" has become "nowmycat", but eventually, they did, and now, they are all the happier for it.

Sometimes, they really do need to run that trial. He felt, from the beginning, that you were most likely the right human for him, but, as anyone who has ever worked with feral and stray cats before knows, sometimes, it takes a while for them to trust their human. The fact that he then came in, made himself at home and quickly befriended your cat really means that he was just waiting a bit before taking the plunge, just making sure that he really was going to end up in the right place.

Ah, from the second that he showed up on your doorstep and you showed him kindness, he and you both knew that he was not going to be a street cat much longer. It doesn't take much for a human and a cat who's looking for a home to bond. For them, it takes a little trust. For us, it takes one look. Instantly, we're in love with them.
